This week’s 5 most important social media changes

What’s changed in the last seven days? What does it mean?

Scannable codes in Messenger, Sketching in Periscope, Hands-free viewing in Vine, Instagram introduces a featured videos section and Facebook teams up with Ticketmaster to allow sales through the social platform.

Let’s take a look at these changes in more detail.

Facebook Messenger now lets you start a chat by scanning profile codes

Facebook Messenger has introduced Codes which can be scanned to start a chat. The Codes appear as circular patterns around a user’s profile photo. Along with this, Facebook has launched Messenger Links which are shortened URLs directly leading to a user’s Messenger profile. A main motivator behind the move was to allow for businesses to utilise Links and Codes on marketing channels so the wider community can reach out to them directly.

Periscope to add sketching, allowing broadcasters to doodle on live video streams

Periscope is now testing a new Sketching feature in which broadcasters can draw on top of a live video stream. There are several colour choices as well as an eyedropper tool to select particular colours from anything being filmed. Sketches will only remain on the video feed for a couple of seconds. Currently this feature is not yet available to all users.

Facebook links up with Ticketmaster to let users purchase tickets on news feed

Ticketmaster confirmed it will begin selling gig and event tickets directly through Facebook. The partnership will extend to Messenger, where users will be able to receive images of their tickets upon request via Facebook’s digital assistant. By putting the ability to buy tickets directly within Facebook Ticketmaster hopes to provide a more seamless purchase experience and, of course, sell more tickets.

Instagram now has a ‘featured’ video channels

Instagram has launched a new feature in its explore section that now includes video channels allowing for images to be avoided entirely when searching. There will also be featured channels with videos on specific topics. Users will also be provided with a separate a ‘videos you might like’ channel. The change, while relatively small, allows for more opportunity for creatively using video as a marketing tool on Instagram.

Vine’s new ‘Watch’ button removes loops and adds hands-free viewing

Vine has rolled out a new ‘Watch’ button for its iOS and Android apps that lets you view a channel’s videos as an endless stream. The app’s new hands-free feature offers a more convenient, as well as conventional, viewing experience. You can also combine Watch with the recently released ‘ordered videos’ feature to watch a user’s channel from newest to oldest (or vice versa) or by popularity with a seamless stream of content.
