YouTube releases 360-degree video with spatial audio, Facebook is looking to add a news section to mobile feeds and tweak results to show articles you’re more likely to read and Google includes ads in Local Searches and details extra details for TV show air times.

Facebook to add News Section to Its Mobile App

Facebook confirmed recently that it’s testing a new, sectioned news feed in addition to the current format. Screenshots released show a new layout of the mobile app, highlighting multiple news sections. This is a response from Facebook around users wanting the ability to see topics and stories they’re more interested in. It also works to encourage users to seek out news on Facebook rather than other platforms.

YouTube launches 360-Degree live streaming and spatial audio

YouTube has introduced 360-degree live streaming and spatial audio for viewers and event organisers. While 360-degree streams aren’t entirely new, spatial audio allows users to listen to streams and video with depth, distance and intensity, adding greater value to the viewer experience. The function is being released as an update to the already existing YouTube app so all users can use this service without the need for new software.

Facebook is tweaking news feeds to show articles you’ll want to read

Facebook claims users don’t always click on articles that really interest them, adding that a better indicator of interest is instead how long is spent looking at the destination content. With this in mind, Facebook will now be tracking how long users spend viewing Instant Articles or posts with the mobile app. Facebook will use these measurement results to better serve up content based on a user’s interests.

Google makes ad updates that affect local search marketers

Advertisements will now start to appear in Local Finder results on Google. They can be reached after clicking ‘More places’ in the main Google search results. Unlike Maps results, advertisers that are featured in Local Finder results will not have a pin on the map. The addition of ads in the Local Finder results means service providers and retailers with low ranking have a new way of getting to the top of the results if users click through to see more listings.

Google to display TV station listings & times for show searches

Google is expanding their TV show search features to include air times and channel information. Searching for TV shows will still continue to show the apps and websites that will stream the show but with these changes it will also begin to show which television network and channel, as well as the time, the show will air on live TV. Another way Google looks to be the one stop shop for information.
